Group report on a band and their song

There are many, many songs in the movie High Fidelity, if only in part. Below is a list of the main ones, those that figured prominently in the movie. After the list are the instructions for your assignment.

Soundtrack

  • "You're Gonna Miss Me" - 13th Floor Elevators
  • "Everybody's Gonna Be Happy" - The Kinks
  • "I'm Wrong About Everything" - John Wesley Harding
  • "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" - The Velvet Underground
  • "Always See Your Face" - Love
  • "Most of the Time" - Bob Dylan
  • "Fallen for You" - Sheila Nicholls
  • "Dry the Rain" - The Beta Band
  • "Shipbuilding" - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
  • "Cold Blooded Old Times" - (Smog)
  • "Let's Get It On" - Barry Jive & The Uptown Five
  • "Lo Boob Oscillator" - Stereolab
  • "Inside Game" - Royal Trux
  • "Who Loves the Sun" - The Velvet Underground
  • "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" - Stevie Wonder

Assignment instructions:

  • Work in groups of no more than four.
  • The teacher will assign you one of the songs and bands to research. For each band and song, answer the following questions as a minimum:
    • When did the band exist? Is it still together?
    • Who were the members of the band?
    • What genre(s) of music did the band play?
    • What were some of the notable periods or events in the band's history?
    • What was the most famous song or album of the band? (Might be more than one.)
    • If the band has broken up, what are the members of the band doing now? (This one might be hard to answer, but try.)
  • You'll mostly be reporting on the band as it might be hard to find specific information about the song appearing in the movie, but if you can find information about the song itself (why it was written, etc.) you can include it.
  • You will not give a presentation in the traditional sense. Rather, the class will ask you questions about your band. The class will ask the basic '5 W's', and they will be responsible for gathering information about your band from you.
  • It's OK (but not required) if you want to prepare one of your band's songs to play for the class. But, please, no Power Point presentations! This is supposed to be an exercise in speaking and listening; therefore, we don't want your information to be readable.
